Angling

The charm of Dungannon district for any fisherman must be the abundance of loughs and river stretches throughout the area. There is little possibility of overcrowding, thereby increasing the chance of a good catch. The varied species of fish include; pike, perch, eel, rudd, brown trout, bream, roach and salmon. Brown trout can be caught in Brantry Lough, Benburb and Rainbow trout can be caught in either the Parklake, Dungannon or the Annaginny Lake in Newmills. All these lakes are suitable for fly-fishing from boats and stands. On the Oona and Ballygawley Rivers there is free fishing and you catch Brown Trout. On the Blackwater you will be able to catch Salmon, Trout and Dollaghan (while in season). Downstream on the Blackwater is suitable for coarse fishing as is Enagh Lough and Roughan Lough, Newmills.Back to top

Walking

There are a number of areas around the town of Dungannon which are just perfect for a walk! Dungannon Park is just on the outskirts of the town and was formerly the private demesne of the Ranfurlys. It covers some 60 acres and it includes a 12 acre fresh lake set in the woodland with facilities for barbecues, caravan and campsite, coffee dock, fishing, walking, golf and a children's play area. The walk is along the lakeside and at the lower end of the lake it enters a glen from where a good view may be had of the 18 th century dam- one of the oldest in Ireland.

Windmill Wood is a small woodland park area and is located on the outskirts of Dungannon. Some interesting features are the reconstructed high tower and the small duck pond. The paths wind their way through the wood finishing at the picnic area.

The Railway Park is a new park opened on the edge of the town and it is set along the linear route of the old railway. The railway theme is very much in evidence as gentle paths wind their way through the grounds.

In Peatlands Park you will discover a network of paths which traverse the woods, open bogs and Nature Reserves. Walks are fairly flat but some can be lengthy. Other facilities include: narrow gauge railway, visitor centre, shop and toilets. It is situated off the M1, at junction 13.

In the Parkanaur Forest Park, there are a variety of nature walks and waymarked trails which meander through this mature forest park, along the river banks through a deer park past the small pond where various species of duck are found. Other facilities include a museum, picnic area, toilets, car park, camp and caravan area (permit holders only may use this site which is part of 'touring in the trees'. It is situated off the A4 Belfast to Enniskillen Road.Back to top
