In the heart of Northern Ireland you will find Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles. Lough Neagh captivates visitors with its tranquil atmosphere, un-spoilt scenery, secluded bays and skyward views. The Lough is a haven for wildlife with many viewpoints around the shoreline. There is so much to see and do from history and heritage; visitor attractions to land and water based activities. The Maid of Antrim is now on the water for passenger boats day trips and the Lough’s two main islands can also be explored on the Trostan and Island Warrior. Gawleys Gate

Description

Gawleys Gate Quay is a small jetty and picnic area near to The Gate Inn at Gawleys Gate. Sunset viewed from the jetty can be spectacular. On many an evening a flotilla of small craft visit the quay.

The site has a picnic and barbecue area, a jetty facility and a slipway. Meals and information can be obtained from The Gate Inn.

Greenmount College

Description

Greenmount College is situated in beautiful countryside, just outside Antrim town and 19 miles from Belfast. The College is set in over 18 hectares of landscaped grounds, originally laid out in the 19th century. Some of the original parkland trees provide the structure for the more modern gardens today. The Greenmount Nature Trail and Walled Garden are well worth a visit.

Kinnego Marina

Description

Situated on Lough Neagh on the edge of the Oxford Island National Nature Reserve, Kinnego Marina is a magnificent rural setting of beauty and tranquility, giving striking views over the Lough and the distant hills of Tyrone and Antrim. Kinnego Marina is the largest marina on the Lough. There is a range of associated amenities on site including a caravan and camp site, children's play area and Carrick- Craft boat sales. The site offers fully sheltered berths with deep and shallow water access. Assistance for launching boats and lifting masts is provided as well as secured summer and winter storage for boats within the Boat Park on-site. Fully trained and qualified staff onsite offer local knowledge, boat tuition and information on safety on Lough Neagh. Power boating and sailing courses are available at the site.

Description

The Lough Neagh Discovery Centre is situated within the breathtaking Oxford Island National Nature Reserve just off the M1 motorway.and is the starting point for any visit to Oxford Island or Lough Neagh.

With its superb setting on the shores of Lough Neagh, disabled access and environmental events, the Centre is an excellent destination for day trips, family days out, wildlife enthusiasts and group visits.  The centres facilities include  a wonderful gift shop and tourist information point, as well as conference rooms and facilities for educational visits. Make sure you don't miss the excellent food and outstanding views from the Loughside Café.

Oxford Island, the National Nature Reserve offers excellent opportunities for people to get close to nature. It is a peninsula today but was an island prior to 1850's before the Lough was successively lowered  to prevent Winter flooding of surrounding farmland.

The reserve consists of 109 ha with 8 km of walks and nature trails accessible in all seasons, five bird watching hides, picnic areas, a paddling pool and children's play area. The richness of the wildflower meadows, woodlands, shoreline and open water means that there is always something special to see. Information panels throughout the Reserve maximise the visitor's enjoyment of this valuable site.
